OpenAI announced on 11 June that its latest flagship model o3-pro had been officially rolled out to ChatGPT Pro and Team users and API developers to replace the previous O1-pro model. Businesses and educational users are expected to have access next week.
According to OpenAI’s presentation, o3-pro is a model of OpenAI’s “best able to reason” to date, built on its o3 base and designed for complex missions such as mathematics, science and programming. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman of OpenAI said: “O3-pro’s intelligence is incredible, and its success relative to o3 is not believed when I first saw it.”

O3-pro is the flagship reasoning model for OpenAI, which is more successful and more successful than O3 in scientific, educational and coding tasks. O3-pro performed better than o1-pro and o3 when dealing with complex physical issues (e.g., simulation of real collisions between sphere and walls) and advanced programming tasks. Optimizing by reason, o3-pro has maintained high performance while reducing about 80 per cent of API call costs and making it more suitable for large-scale deployment.

OpenAI wrote in the update log: “In expert evaluations, commentators have always preferred o3-pro in all test categories, especially in key areas such as science, education, programming, business and writing assistance. Commentators also consistently rate o3-pro better in terms of clarity, comprehensiveness, compliance with directives and accuracy.”
According to OpenAI, O3-pro can use tools that enable it to search web pages, analyse documents, debunk visual input, use Python, use memory-specific responses, etc. OpenAI states that one disadvantage of O3-pro is that its response usually takes longer than o1-pro to complete.
O3-pro has other restrictions. ChatGPT has temporarily disabled the temporary chat with the model during OpenAI’s “technical problems”. O3-pro cannot generate images. In addition, OpenAI ‘ s AI area function Canvas does not support o3-pro.

In 2024, OpenAI had generated $3.6 billion and was expected to exceed $5 billion in 2025, mainly thanks to ChatGPT Pro subscriptions and API services. OpenAI plans to optimize O3-pro ‘ s reasoning and expand its multi-modular capabilities in the coming months. In addition, the downward revision of O3-pro ‘ s API prices will facilitate the adoption of SMEs and individual developers, with an expected 50 per cent increase in API calls by 2025.
