Sony recently published a brand-new patent for artificial intelligence systems designed to help players trapped at the game level or in the BOSS war. This technique, known as “AI Generating Ghost Players”, allows players to use “phantoms” to assist in the completion of local or all barriers when they encounter difficulties, thus advancing the game process.

According to AllaboutAI, this technology is described as a super-layered system that interacts with the environment in real time, with the effect of having a partner in a cooperative game directly demonstrating a pass-through programme in the game. Another option presented in the patent shows that users can switch to different assistive models as needed. This patent, which was submitted globally in 2024, was of concern only as a result of recent state updates. The patent abstract explains that the system is designed to “assist players in video games”. Specific processes include: “Operation of game sessions”, “Managing players control roles in sessions” and “Monitoring the selection of ghost-assisted functions”. The game sessions are theoretically connected to the AI engine, providing ghost assistance through natural language queries, and promoting ghost roles in the game.

The patent introductory section states: “Despite the many advances in game technology, some players still need assistance. The games are becoming increasingly complex, and non-professional players often give up or have difficulty in fulfilling their tasks. While a player may study a schematic or online view of a process video, the process is time-consuming and is often of limited relevance to the current situation.” This is not the first time Sonny has explored an AI-driven player solution. The video released last year shows a dialogue between the director of PlayStation software engineering, Sharon Raghoebardajal, and the early AI version of the Horizon role, the Elloy prototype. Microsoft also has a long-standing commitment to integrating AI support into its systems.
